Review: MR PORTER

When in Amsterdam, make a reservation at this refined steakhouse for impressive plates coupled with an energetic ambience

The experience:

Tucked away on the top floor of W Amsterdam, diners are met with an expansive glass fridge at the reception, boasting the finest cuts of meat – a teaser to what lies ahead. Buzzing with chatter, we arrived at the modern steakhouse on a weeknight evening and plonked ourselves on the leather couch within singular booths, with views facing the lively open kitchen to one end and vibrant, yet dim-lit, bar towards the other corner. When the weather permits, diners can enjoy their meal al fresco while taking in views towards Dam Square.

Featuring a chic brass-adorned dining room with a briskly efficient teamthis concept by The  Entourage Group (coming soon to Dubai) serves an upmarket menu with simple, aromatic flavours, allowing the ingredient in focus to steal the limelight.

Menu highlights:

Sharing style is encouraged here, and honestly, the route you’d want to go down to tuck into multiple dishes. Classic ingredients are cooked with contemporary flair, such as the sublime Josper roasted whole leek, with just the right amount of char. The incredibly light Zucchini carpaccio features three varieties of the vegetable topped with a delicate garlic dressing and shavings of Belper Swiss cheese. If you can squeeze in another appetizer, the Grilled octopus comes in highly recommended, showcasing bite-sized Jerusalem artichoke and aji Amarillo that pairs well with the tender seafood.

Craving a surf and turf plate, we ordered the juicy Grilled lobster dressed in herb butter and Rib eye at medium temperature, cooked to perfection. The responsibly sourced steaks come from grass-fed cattle, placing premium quality ingredients at the forefront of this dining experience.

What’s a great piece of steak without mustard to complement it? Here, a curated Mustard menu lists everything from classic flavours such as Dijon, Pommery honey and Colman’s English to speciality variations including figs, grape, and garlic. I chose the lemon & basil for a hint of citrus while my dining partner tried the Pommery white grain for texture.

The Slow cooked lamb ossobuco was another remarkable meat dish, featuring fall-off-the-bone meat that melts in your mouth. The half eaten Focaccia from our amuse bouche course sat in a corner until the lamb arrived – make sure to dip the bread in this divine sauce. To balance the richness of the meat dishes, we ordered the Spicy pile of tomatoes from the salad menu. The serving of flavoursome fresh cherry tomatoes is a stunner, comprising an olive oil dressing laden with coriander and chilli.

While the Sinful dessert section offers a decent assortment, most diners come here for the renowned Coconut sorbet. Presented in a coconut, we’re told the flesh is scooped out, blended, and placed back into the shell to form a frozen sorbet, served with pineapple cubes and Tom Yum caviar (yes, the hot and sour Thai soup!). These mini caviar ice cream balls lend a surprisingly interesting flavour that marries well with the creamy coconut sorbet. A refreshing finish to a sumptous meal!
