Spinneys celebrates a century of impact in the Middle East

Sponsored: This month marks a remarkable milestone—Spinneys is turning 100! From its modest beginnings in 1924, Spinneys has become a cherished part of the Middle East

The story begins with Arthur Rawdon Spinney, a British army officer who envisioned a fresh grocery experience in the Middle East. He persuaded three British businessmen to invest £10,000, leading to the establishment of Spinneys in Alexandria, Egypt. Initially catering to British expatriates with food and household items, the brand rapidly expanded to Beirut, Haifa, Damascus, and Baghdad.

By 1961, Spinneys made its debut in Dubai, opening its first supermarket a year later in Deira, now known as Al Nasr Square. This 1,600 sq ft store quickly became known as ‘The Frozen Chicken’ due to its pioneering cold storage rooms. The late His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the then-ruler of Dubai, was its first customer.

In 1978, Spinneys unveiled its flagship store on Zabeel Road, the most modern supermarket in Dubai at that time, featuring a state-of-the-art cold store and housing the main depot and offices. Over the years, it expanded further across Dubai and the surrounding emirates.

Today, Spinneys operates over 60 stores across the UAE, Oman, and KSA, renowned for its exceptional fresh food offerings. With a team of more than 4,000 people from over 30 nationalities, the chain remains deeply committed to community growth. From family fun runs to the Spinneys Dubai 92 Cycle Challenge, the company continues to be a vital part of the community.

Here’s to celebrating 100 years of Spinneys for delivering premium food and outstanding service to the Middle East!
